Excerpt from Partners:
Napoleon Solo went through the documents, most of them from
his fellow Continental chiefs. At the bottom of the pile was an envelope. When he turned it over, he noticed a hammer and sickle burned into
the red wax sealing the envelope. It only took a second to read the
contents.
"It has come to our attention that the agent on temporary loan to
the United Network Command has been transferred from the field. As
this negates the contract which our agency has with the U.N.C.L.E., we
are exercising our option to reclassify the status of said agent, pursuant
to Clause 4B of Section 12.
"Captain Illya Nickovetch Kuryakin is hereby recalled to active duty
in Moscow by order of the First Directorate, and ordered to report for reassessment and reassignment at 14:00 hours, 15 March 1970,
Staraye Square. An acknowledgement of these orders is required."
He sat there, frowning, the opener in his hand like a dagger and
said, "Damn," very softly. The word echoed in the empty room, vibrating softly in the hum of electronic equipment and computer consoles.
But suddenly the room was emptier than it had been only a moment ago.
Or was it half a lifetime ago? Or many lifetimes ago?
Blood Agent
Novel by Paula Smith. 1996 Fan Quality Award winner. 100 pp. $12 (not including postage).
Art by Mike Cole.
Excerpt:
Somewhere, a glass wall crashed to splinters. The
building began to shake. A fire alarm went off, and there was a faint
smell of smoke.
"Illya, get out. Take Ergheny, and go," Napoleon ordered, fighting
to breathe.
"You'll die." He looked at Ergheny. "And so will he."
"You have...better idea?"
"Maybe." Slowly, Illya got to his feet. "Whatever we
do, and say, to the Stone is done to us."
He stood still for a moment longer, then walked toward Ergheny.
He looked nervous and unusually pale. Napoleon's ears were
ringing, but he heard Illya say, in Russian, "Pallo. Save Napoleon,
and, if you can please save me."
Then Illya took out his gun.
To the Stone he said, "I give you my life."
Put the gun to his throat.
And shot himself.
"*Blood?*" Napoleon said. "What is this? You think he's
a vampire? Illya was healed by the Stone -- we all were. There's
no such thing as a vampire!"
Illya's mouth moved, but no sound came out. He paused.
Then, and only then, he inhaled.
"I'm afraid that's not true, Napoleon." His friend's eyes grew
very dark and Russian in the dirty face. "I am now such a thing."

It is February, 1987. Thrush is making another comeback. One of their scientists has developed an ingenious narcotic which binds with the molecules of caffeine to subdue unsuspecting populations and take over the world at last. Solo and Kuryakin are called back into service. Kuryakin has been living with an artist in Brussels and working as a freelance spy. Solo, long retired from espionage, is a self-employed businessman with a college-age daughter named Allyson.
The girl, who knows nothing of her father's previous life, is caught up in the desperate search for the drug, a pursuit which runs through London, Atlanta, and the hallowed halls of the Ivy League. The affair ends in the coffee-growing regions of Central America, where Allyson learns about the "family business," Illya gets some unexpected exercise, and Napoleon is forced to confront his past.
Excerpt:
"Sit down, Napoleon," the Russian said softly. I've been expecting you.
Solo dropped into the opposite seat and pushed the wine bottle aside. "We've been a bit anti-social lately, haven't we?"
Kuryakin peered over his eyeglasses. "You mean the errand boys?" He snapped his book shut. "I knew if it was something really important, they'd send you. And I was right: here you are. So my friend, how close to the apocalypse are we this time?"
Solo chuckled. "Near the brink."
"Then we'd better order another bottle of wine and you can tell me all about it."
